• Why I do what I do

Ever wonder to yourself some days why you do certain things or what really keeps you going and for what reason?  When thinking about what inspires me in life, the answer wasn’t quite clear at first.  Once I thought  a little bit harder I realized it is an easy answer, Love.  Sounds cliché coming from a wedding planner I know but my career choice has made me realize this.

There are many types of love in this world. Every relationship we have is a different love from the next. My love for my job is a passionate love.  My love for my best friend is a sincere love.  My love for my family is an everlasting love. My love for sports is an exhilarating love. My love for shoes is an obsessive love. My love for that special someone is true love.

The most important love is an unconditional love. This is the love that I get to see every day.  Not only do I get to see this in the couples I work with, but the families I get to meet, the vendors I work with and the team I work with.  I am truly blessed to do what I do.

I am a big fan of quotes, and have many favorite quotes on love.  Today I am going to share what I believe true
unconditional love is: “when the feelings of someone else become more important than your own”, you know you have found true unconditional love.  In a world filled of selfishness I am truly inspired when I see this.

To all the couples I have worked with, am working with and will be working with, I would like you to know that I am truly privileged to be a part of such an important day!  There is nothing better than to be a part of that moment when two people look into each other’s eyes and declare that their love is unconditional. I get to be a part of that, and it truly is inspiring.  I love what I do and couldn’t ask for anything more in a job.

Looking forward to the 2012 Wedding Season!

As an event designer, there is nothing I love more than working with an adventurous couple, eager to fill their wedding with sweet and well planned details. The details are the things that will set your day apart from all the others, and really put your personal stamp on the day.

These details are also the thing that will set your photos apart and allow your photographer to sum up your vision for the day with ease. I always suggest thinking of the words you would use to describe your wedding, then finding props that fit that vision.

It doesn’t have to be  extravagant either, it just has to be you- like this basket of peaches from a gorgeous farm wedding I stumbled across on Snippet and Ink.

Larissa Cleveland Photography, via Snippet and Ink

This is a great option for couples that are on a budget, but want to maximize the look of their decor and photography. A few well styled vignettes will create huge visual impact that won’t break the bank.

Styling props into your shoot can maximize your photography in other ways, too. For camera shy brides and groom, props are a good way to refocus any nervous energy, and distract you from the camera.

We are growing our rental inventory here at Milestone, to include vintage trunks, furniture, picture frames and all manner of lovely kick knacks with which to style your shoot. Why not make it easy on yourself; contact  our office for details, and to book your complimentary consultation!

    Happy planning all!

  • We <3 Daydream Weddings

I decided to have some fun with the lovely Amy Williams of Daydream Weddings and do an interview! Rather than me just write about her amazing talent and work I got the person who knows her best, herself, to speak on photography, celebrity crushes, and everything in between! Find the interview below:

    1. What is your favourite part of wedding photography?

    ~My favourite part is meeting with the couple after the wedding is all over. There’s no stress, they are married and we can sit back and look at their photos. I love it when they say, “I don’t remember this!” or “how did you get this photo?” Kinda makes me feel like a photo ninja. Capturing moments of the day, little snippets of their life is something that not only they will look back on but so will generations to come. {I have my parents and grandparents wedding photos hanging in my office.}

    2. How do you bring a couples style and personality into their engagement shoot?

~I ask the couple to think of what makes them a great couple. I don’t want to take them to a random park or a location “I like” I want them to have input into this as well. Photos are like music, you know when you hear a song you haven’t heard in years but if it’s a good one, you can remember where you were and who you were with? That’s how I feel about photos. I want them to look back on their pictures and say, this was where we met or got engaged, having a story behind the location is just as important as you are as a couple. I can tell a detailed story about each of my past clients just from their engagement photos! It’s pretty rad!!

    3. What has been your best memory so far in your photography career?

~Walking on the Great Wall of China with my friends and a camera. It was October and freezing but a beautiful sunny day. This was back in the day when we still used FILM, I can’t wait to go back so I can take more photos!!

~Just last year when one of my Abbotsford Heat Pictures accompanied a story on NHL.com I had to get a friend to look at the site just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things!

    4. What would you say has been your greatest achievement personally and career based?

~They are one in the same. It has always been a dream to start my own business and here I am. There are ups and downs, as there are for everyone. To wake up every day and truly love what I do, capturing moments in peoples lives that they will cherish forever, makes me so very happy.

    5. What is one word you would use to describe the feeling you want a couple to have after working with you?

    ~Bliss.

    6.  What is your next big goal in your career?

    ~I want to start saving money to start traveling the world again. {with my camera of course!}

    7.  What would your last meal on earth be?

~Mexican Food! To be even more precise, I would say mole’ chicken enchiladas with some chile con quasi dip and chips and of course a few daiquiris!

    8.  If you were to be anywhere by yourself on a summer evening, where would you be?

~If I’m anywhere near the water I’m happy.

    9. Who is forever your celebrity crush?

~The very drool worthy and brilliant Jeremy Renner!

    10. What are you listening to these days?

~I love music and I have to have it while working at my computer! Currently my faves are: Foster the People, Childish Gambino, The Black Keys, Noah and the Whale, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. My absolute favourite is a DJ in California called The Flashdance DJ he has fantastic mixes on his website that will make you want to dance all day and everyone will know the songs he uses!

    11. One word or phrase that has ‘Amy Williams’ written all over it.

~”Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.” Maya Angelou

  • Choosing Videography Wisely

When choosing a videographer for your wedding there are so many things to consider. The most important factor to mention here is experience. Usually you can find that price point is directly correlated to experience, but that is not always the case. Here are 3 keys in unfolding the level of  “experience” you are attaining to capture your wedding day.

    1. Editing

Be sure to find out the labour and effort involved in the editing process. Good quality editing will make a large difference in the price you pay. Some key questions to ask: What will the length of the video be and how many hours of editing are involved(should be around 30-40hrs.)? Will there be any titles, captions or music included? Will there be a menu on the DVD?

Is there an option to have “raw” footage only so you can have the editing done at a later date(when it can be afforded)? Is the editing non-linear?

    2. Equipment

Find out the quality of equipment being used and if it is regularly maintained. I have yet to encounter a good, inexpensive videographer. It’s also a good idea to find out the last time their equipment was upgraded. “3-Chip Digital” is the most recent and highest resolution camera. Most digital cameras have 530 lines of resolution. Super VHS & Hi-8 cameras (which use analog tape) have 400 lines of resolution and VHS cameras have 230 lines of resolution. The higher the lines of resolution, the better quality picture you will get, but expect to pay more for a videographer who uses 3-Chip Digital cameras.

    3. Ask for a demo

Here are some things to look for when viewing a demo: Do their titles, special effects, and graphics look professional? Is there any vibration and is the panning smooth from left to right? Is the lighting bright and accurate is does it appear fuzzy or grainy? Are the scene transitions smooth and is the audio clear?

I know, so many things to consider!!! Although I can’t give a specific price guide take into consideration professional videography is usually at least as expensive as professional photography. Remembering that most videos require several days of skilled labour with expensive equipment, you can see why good video production costs a lot.

In the end, I am sure it will be worth every penny and more!

    Happy Hunting!

  • Wedding Venue Love | Aberthau Mansion

If you haven’t gotten the hint yet, I am a true lover of all things vintage. So naturally, stunning heritage homes always top my list of favourite wedding venues. Vancouver is pretty limited in its options for these, with Cecil Green, Hycroft and Brock House booking up fast and far in advance.

That is precisely why I love the lesser known, and equally as beautiful, Aberthau Mansion. Acting as a home for the West Point Grey Community Centre, Aberthau is tucked away on the edge of Jericho Beach, surrounded by lovely gardens, and full to the rafters with early 1900′s character detail.

    image via savourychef.com

While pretty well booked for Summer 2012, I have been told that there are still a few spots available for fall and winter  events. With all the dark wood panelling, and stunning indoor ceremony space, I think this is a perfect option for any bride dreaming of a candle lit winter wedding.

I have heard concerns regarding the hours Aberthau keeps, requiring events to conclude by 11:00. However, with its close proximity to Downtown, and  super affordable rates, I say all the more reason to rent yourself a party bus, and surprise your guests with an amazing after party in the city.

This place is a true hidden gem, and part of Vancouver’s heritage. Check out their website for booking information and more details!

    Happy planning, all.

One of my absolute favourite wedding venues is the stunning and beautifully architectural John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse. It is a fully floating facility nestled along the banks of the historic Fraser River, just minutes from the  Vancouver International Airport and the heart of Richmond’s business and entertainment district. You can hosts a variety of special events and occasions, from elegant dockside wedding ceremonies to casual cocktail receptions in the upper floors of this unique facility, UBC Boathouse is sure to provide an original and picturesque location for your wedding. Located in South Langley in the midst of beautiful country homes and palatial estates is High Point Equestrian Centre. It is the focal point of High Point Estate Community. The luxurious clubhouse boasts many amenities and can be used for diverse events from a small, intimate baby shower to a3 course plated wedding soirée for 120 people.

It is the all in one location, perfect for ceremony, photos, and reception. It’s a very unique place to hold a wedding, not only for a horse lover, but generally a lover of the outdoors. This is an absolutely beautiful venue!

  • Venue Love: Bridges Restaurant

Granville Island is a great place to look at venues if you want a breath taking view of Vancouver.  The best thing about it is all the venues have amazing but different views.  I had the privilege this week to take a tour of Bridges Restaurant. With the stunning
view of Burrard Bridge and False Creek, you can’t go wrong with this venue!

At Bridges you can have your reception as well as your ceremony here.  The venue can accommodate up to 150 people for a plated event.  With 3 different areas in the restaurant to choose from it is a great place for not only weddings but birthdays,
anniversaries, business meetings and corporate events!

Susan Sharun, Bridges Event Manager refers to her venue as a “hidden gem on the water”.
To see for yourself make sure to book a reservation during Dine out Vancouver! Rumor has it there are actually offering a four course meal instead of the standard three!

  • Tangerine Dreams

With the start of 2012 comes another new Pantone Colour of the Year, and another fresh burst of wedding design inspiration. I use the term fresh literally when it comes to this years top pick, Tangerine Tango. It’s sunny, warm, and sweet, with endless design possibilities.

Pantone 2012 Colour of the Year

As designers, we here at Milestone are never afraid of a pop of colour. For those brides-to-be that aren’t either, (and hey, even those that are)  here are some easy ways to sweeten up your day with a few splashes of Tangerine Tango.

    1) Stationery

With just a hint of you accent colour, it will leave your guests hungry for more, and give them a hint of what is to come.

Stationery by On Paper via Style Me Pretty

    2) Fresh Floral

Flowers are the best way to infuse your event with colour. I love a playful, multi-tonal effect, with varying shades within one pallet.

    3) Cake

A clean white cake, with a bright pop of colour is always a fresh and modern favourite in my books.

    4) Your Girls

What colour sets of a sun kissed summer glow better than Tangerine? As with the flowers, don’t be afraid to mix and match styles and shades to find the perfect look for each of your lovely ladies.

    5) Sweets

There is no shortage of yummy options when it comes to orange flavoured candy! Regardless of your accent colour, pick your theme a go with it!

    6)Favours

When the day is done, send your guests home with little something to remember you, and your wicked design by!

Tangerine has long been one of my favourite colours, so I’m glad to see the design world agree. I can’t wait to see how it shapes the 2012  wedding season!

    Happy planning, all.
